What Is Iconic Atlanta?

I'm curious what other people think of when they think of Atlanta - what images spring to mind?

I subscribe to Fodor's Travel newsletter and whenever they do a story about "The Best_____in______," people always leave comments about how they made the wrong choices. So I'm curious about what people would say about the top iconic places/images in Atlanta.

I'm surprised by how many people mention the Varsity when I tell them I live in Atlanta. My ex-husband's parents had their 50th-anniversary gathering at the Varsity because it was where they had their first date!

I imagine a lot of long-time Atlantans have memories of going there as youngsters. I looked it up and was surprised to see it opened in 1928.

But what other places, signs, buildings, or neighborhoods do you consider iconic? What images come to mind?

Here are some things that come to mind for me:

  • Martin Luther King, Jr's birth home
  • Ebenezer Baptist Church
  • Sweet Auburn/The Municipal Market
  • Centennial Park Fountain
  • City views from multiple locations such as the Jackson Street Bridge
  • Retro signs such as the Krispy Kreme Donut sign and the old Kodak sign
  • Ponce City Market
  • Views from Piedmont Park
  • A few of the old churches
  • The Capitol building
  • The Swan House/Atlanta History Center
  • Oakland Cemetery
  • The Margaret Mitchell House
  • The High Museum
  • Mary Mac's Tea Room
  • Clermont Lounge
  • Fox Theatre
  • Madam CJ Walker Museum
  • Krog Street Tunnel
  • Ponce City Market
  • Walter's Clothing

Whew!

That's a lot.

But I know I'm probably leaving some important things off the list. I did do a couple of Google searches but I'm interested in knowing what my readers think.

So...what do you think is iconic in Atlanta?

Have a good rest of your day.

See you between the raindrops!

xoxo,
Susan
